Match Report: Widzew Łódź – Lech Poznań 27.07.2024

You are currently viewing Match Report: Widzew Łódź – Lech Poznań 27.07.2024

Hotly anticipated match between two of the biggest supported clubs in Poland. Added to the tension between the fans were several factors, such as Lech having a friendship with Widzew’s city rivals ŁKS. Not only that, Lech fans also lost 7 banners to Widzew a couple of years ago and the final 1 was burned at the last fixture between the teams with away fans allowed in March 2023. Since then, 2 matches were played (1 in Lodz, 1 in Poznan) both without guest fans allowed as a punishment for the match in March 2023. With the bans now over, Lech were once again able to visit the guest sector at Widzew’s stadium.

Lech fans travelled by special train to Lodz with 900 fans (away sector capacity). Of course including support from their friends from ŁKS. Every fan had a special t-shirt with Lech Poznań written on the back and anty RTS (Widzew) on the front which created a nice effect visually.

As for Widzew, once again they sold out 16k season tickets and every game is likely to be a sell out for another season at their stadium. The atmosphere at Widzew’s stadium is certainly one of the best in Poland and is one of the few stadiums where all 4 tribunes are regularly standing and involved in the atmosphere.

For this match Widzew Ultras prepared 2 choreographies. 1 in the first half which was a card display ‘WIDZEW ŁÓDŹ’. The banner at the front reading ‘No One Likes Us We Don’t Care’, reference to one of Lech’s old banners which was stolen by Widzew a few years ago. Now Widzew made their own banner which is identical except for their colours instead of Lech’s.

The 2nd choreography arrived in the second half, the banner at the front referencing the fact that there is only one club playing in the top division in Poland this season, which is of course in reference to ŁKS who were relegated last season. A big pyro show followed as Widzew fans helped their team towards a 2-1 win.
